Diabetic Diet - Eating The Right Foods
11-05-08

When people are told they have diabetes, they automatically assume that all sugars and breads are to be eliminated from their diet. Not true! Now there are more ways to enjoy a diabetic healthy food diet. There are now more choices for breads, that are just as flavorful, and with new sugar substitutes, it feels like you are free to eat what you want.

A diabetic healthy food diet is easy to follow if you take time to understand what affects your glucose level. Different food will affect people in different ways. For instance, potatoes will raise some peoples blood sugar by one hundred points, and in others, only a slight raise will occur. The same applies with flour, or white bread. Be sure to check your glucose levels several times a day to see how foods will affect it.

SUGAR SUBSTITUTES-
You can use sugar substitutes for most of your baking needs. Also, it can be used to sweeten drinks, such as tea, coffee, or kool-aid. Some substitutes taste so much like actual sugar, that it's hard for anyone to tell the difference. This will considerably cut down on your sugar intake.

WHEAT BREAD/FLOUR-
When you need to cut corners on carbohydrates, look for wheat! It is easy to find wheat breads that are high in fiber, which cuts down on actual carbohydrates that are ingested. Also, wheat flour is sold in most grocery stores, and is a great way to bake your favorite dishes, while maintaining a healthy diabetic diet plan.

WATER-
Never underestimate the power of water. Drinking water flushes glucose from the body, and can help keep levels down. Drinking the proverbial eight glasses of water a day can help keep you feeling energized. When your glucose levels are high, you become sluggish, and tired. But flushing extra sugars out can make you feel in top shape!

EXERCISE-
Daily exercise really makes a difference in your glucose levels. A simple exercise, like walking, is effective and enjoyable. Jogging, swimming, playing sports, all are wonderful ways to control blood sugar levels. Remember to consult your physician before beginning any new exercise routine. When you get the all clear, get out and enjoy yourself. And the weight loss is just an added perk!

MONITORING GLUCOSE LEVELS-
Using a glucometer to check the amount of glucose in your blood is a very important step in keeping yourself healthy. Check your blood as often as your doctor prescribes. Sometimes it is nessecary to check it more often, if your are starting new medicines, or adjusting your current dose. Also, if you don't feel "up to par" it is a good idea to check it then.

Being a diabetic doesn't mean the end of the world. You just have to make simple life changes and things can be kept under control. Watching your diet, exercising, and monitoring your blood glucose levels daily will keep things running smoothly. Eat healthy and enjoy it.
